Temperament

Friendly, food-motivated, and famously forgiving of an inconsistent first-time training approach — the Labrador's reputation as the default family dog is earned, not just inherited from decades of popularity. They're sturdy enough for toddler households (see our family breeds guide) and trainable enough that basic obedience work rarely turns into a struggle.

Exercise — the first surprise

New owners drawn in by the calm, friendly reputation are often caught off guard by how much exercise a Labrador actually needs — 60 minutes or more most days, not the short walk the breed's easygoing temperament might suggest. An under-exercised Labrador doesn't become aggressive, but it does become genuinely difficult: chewing, counter-surfing, and restless behavior are common outlets for pent-up energy. See our active lifestyles guide for how it compares to higher-drive breeds.

Grooming — the second surprise

The short coat looks low-maintenance, and in terms of brushing time, it mostly is. What it doesn't prepare new owners for is the sheer volume of shedding — Labradors shed heavily year-round with seasonal spikes, and a good vacuum with a pet-hair setting stops being optional fairly quickly.

Health

As a large, popular breed with a wide gene pool, Labradors carry an elevated risk of hip and elbow dysplasia — worth asking for hip and elbow scores if buying from a breeder. Labradors are also prone to obesity, partly because of how food-motivated and easygoing they are; portion control matters more here than the breed's active reputation suggests.

Who this breed actually fits

Someone with a genuinely active daily routine — not aspirational, actual — who wants a forgiving, sturdy, trainable companion and doesn't mind a fair amount of vacuuming. A weaker fit for anyone hoping "friendly" means "low exercise," which is the single most common mismatch this breed runs into.
